The more time we spend online the more cybercrime there seems to be. There are waves of cybercrime and cyber fraud all over the world, and it’s important to actively stay alert and aware of the techniques that these criminals use. Metro Title is actively working on keeping our customers protected and aware of any issues or crimes.
So what is Cyber Fraud? Cybercrime includes any profit-driven criminal activity that is online. Including ransom, phishing scams, email and internet fraud, human trafficking, Identity theft, and any attempts to steal financial information. While most cybercriminals are out to steal or profit from the theft of others, they can also be carried out to damage the computer that you’re using by using malware or viruses.
If there is an opportunity, Cybercriminals will take it. Cybercriminals are constantly looking for the next victim and use various assaults to carry out cyberattacks. They are always on the lookout for new methods and techniques, all the while, avoiding detection and arrest.
The number one most common cyberattack in 2021 were Phishing e-mail scams. Phishing e-mails mimic or copy messages from someone you know or a business that you trust. They are specifically designed to trick their intended victim into giving up personal information or finances, or to click on malware that puts your entire computer at risk. Thousands of phishing scams happen every single day.
The best way to avoid these e-mails? Don’t click on ANY links or suspicious attachments. Verify with the sender of the e-mail by calling them to make sure it’s safe. Look at the return address; if it doesn’t match the address in the body of the e-mail, it’s most likely a scam. Trust your instincts, and never be afraid to call to verify.
For your protection, if you receive an e-mail containing wire transfer instructions, always independently confirm the wiring information in person or call your escrow officer at Metro Title. As a Title company, Metro Title is always working to protect our customers. We are working closely with experts to make sure that we are up-to-date on virus and malware protection and ever evolving to counter-attack against Cybercrime.
